The Christmas of 1889 is fast approaching and the members of the Thursday Night Murder Games Club are settling in for some much-deserved relaxation, beginning with a cozy meal at the home of their patroness, Geraldine Bainbridge. But a frantic knock at the door changes everything. Geraldine’s friend Tess has come to beg for their help, explaining that her eighteen year old daughter Anna has run off with a portrait painter named LaRusse Chapman. The two of them have escaped to the countryside of Kent, where LaRusse presides over a colony of gypsy-like and half-starving artists. The group - which espouses any number of shockingly liberal causes, including “free love” – has taken up residence in the dilapidated Hever Castle, the abandoned childhood home of Queen Anne Boleyn.
Within hours, Scotland Yard detectives Trevor Welles and Rayley Abrams are headed south on an unofficial mission to bring Anna at least back to London, if not to her senses. But they are scarcely within the crumbling walls of the castle when they realize that the place if far more sinister than they expected. LaRusse Chapman is not merely a seducer of young girls, but a man teetering on the brink of madness. His painting in process, The Angel of Hever Castle, seems to magically change itself each night, with the face of the Madonna morphing from one woman to another. And when Trevor and Rayley encounter a ghostly figure in white on the meadows surrounding the castle, they begin to question their own sanity. Has the spell of Hever Castle engulfed them as well?
The Angel of Hever Castle is a Christmas-themed novella and the fifth volume in the City of Mystery series. Fans of the previous books will be happy to see some old friends in cameo appearances – Geraldine’s crusty beau Fleanders returns, as does the mystic Madame Renata, the misguided politician Michael Weaver and his eccentric sister Adelaide.

This is very short book which can be read in a few hours. An 18 year old girl, Anna has run off with a painter, LaRusse Chapman, hired by her family to paint a portrait of Anna. It is 1889, Victorian times, the situation is a terrible shame for the family. Anna`s mother, Tess, asks for help from her neighbour, Geraldine, a member of the Murder Games Club, together with two Scotland Yard detectives, Welles and Abrams. Apparently Anna followed the painter willingly, as she fell in love with him, and it seems that this Chapman guy has already seduced other girls of good families. Their destination was Hever Castle, a fomer royal castle in Kent, now absolutely dilapidated and seat of a bunch of artists, who go there only to seek free love. Nobody has any money, they eat what they can gather on the fields around the castle and they live in dirt and poverty. The two detectives arrive to the castle, present themselves as a painter and a poet, they solve the case very soon, trying to convince Anna to go back to her family and that sinful experience will be forgiven and forgotten. For those who want to read the book, it is better not to reveal more, the story is entertaining, the book light, but it is worthwhile readingProduct details

The Angel of Hever Castle A City of Mystery Christmas Novella edition by Kim Wright Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I love the City of Mystery series. This one wasn't among my favorite. I guess being a short novella the plot had to be simpler. It was less believable than the others in the series. Ms. Wright, please give us another full novel version with all our favorite characters and in a new city.
I don't usually pick up novellas because I just find that they frustrate me. Most offer only a tidbit of information-- a glimpse into the life of a side character, a potential-but-not-fully-fleshed story arc for the full sized installment to come or, most often, they simply exist as a teaser for the author's next book-- something to keep us book geeks salivating. This is NOT the case with Kim Wright's Angel of Hever Castle. Not only is it a fully-fleshed story complete with a satisfying ending, but it is perfectly capable of being a stand-alone. And though the case was simpler and more quickly solved than most that Trevor and his team tackle, it did not lack in authenticity, suspense, and of course, "the twist"! Additionally, the reader was treated to glimpses of most all our favorite characters and a new (and interesting) historical setting as well as a light lesson in how Christmas and the many holiday traditions were approached during a different time. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment, but this was a great holiday treat!
This is a well written novella that takes place in the regency era. The characters were believable and well portrayed. I was able to figure out some of the mysteries within the story, but there were a few surprises. I would recommend this book to those who like period cozy mysteries.
..these City of Mystery books. And this novella was charming also, but had some typos which should be addressed. I squealed with delight when "the doctor on Baker Street" was sent for (Dr. Watson, Holmes' sidekick). There were a few historical inaccuracies concerning the Boleyn estate and Hever castle, but overall quite enjoyable.
An okay short read, if a little predictable. I do like the main characters, though, and would like to meet them in a novel-length work. The Scotland Yard detectives seem a very interesting pair, and I like the female characters, too. They have variety and interesting pasts, from what I can gather in this novella. I will probably seek out more work by this author to see how I like these characters when fully fleshed out.
i have been binge reading this series and have really enjoyed it! i like the time period, the characters, and the historical detail that is involved. kim even includes a little bit at the end discussing what is historically accurate. i definitely recommend this series.
I love this series. The characters are marvelous and make me smile. Then there are the great descriptions of such interesting places. This one dealt with a mystery at Hever Castle which has become an artist colony of quirky people. Of course there is a murder. But there is also a Victorian Christmas and all the people who I enjoyed bumping into in the other books. Merry Christmas and enjoy the ending!
